What is Blooms TL?
Bloom's TL is an iOS app that classifies learning outcome statements based on Bloom's Taxonomy (Anderson and Krathwhol, 2001). This taxonomy describes the depth of thinking required by students in learning activities and assessments. The six levels in Bloom's taxonomy are: Remembering, Comprehending, Applying, Analysing, Evaluating, and Creating. The classification in this app uses tables containing verbs and other parts of speech that are generally indicative of a given Bloom's level. These tables have been previously been identified in the education literature (Stanny, 2016; von Konsky et al., 2018).
The depth of thinking and an indicative list of verbs for each of the six Bloom's level is given in the table below. For a complete list of verbs used in this app, see the Verbs screen in this app.
Bloom’s level | Semantic meaning | Indicative verbs |
---|---|---|
1. Remembering | Simple recall often associated with memorisation | list, name, state, define |
2. Comprehending | Basic understanding sufficient to explain ideas to others | identify, explain, describe |
3. Applying | Use of information or knowledge in new ways | apply, use, solve, compute |
4. Analysing | Establishing connections or relationships | analyse, compare, classify |
5. Evaluating | Form a judgement or critique | evaluate, appraise, determine | 6. Creating | Synthesising something new | create, design, plan, compose |

Verb Tables
Verb tables currently loaded in Bloom's TL can be seen on the Verbs screen. Select the Bloom's Level to view the verbs associated with that level, and a brief overview that characterises the verbs in each category.
Bloom's TL enables users to import their own verb tables to supplement the tables that have been pre-loaded. Use the Import button on the Verbs screen.
Imported tables must be plain text in Comma Separatd Value (CSV) format. The first line of the CSV file must contain the following header:
Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analysing, Evaluating, Creating
It is necessary that the header uses the Australian spelling shown, with the first letter capitalised.
Clear imported verb tables by pressing the Reset button on the Verbs screen.
